walks in nature...

Dear Friends,

Many of you have sent me off-list trying to understand
either what is a hike in Egypt or how is it like to
hike in this country's mountains.

Beside the Nile Safari that will be done Fri, Saturday
will see another event for those of you who wishes to
join (seems that there will be little sun and no rain
as Waleed brought to our attention CNN's forecast).

This is your chance to try the closest thing to a
hike. It'll be a walk in Wadi Digla for a little bit
over an hour. Maybe if you like it you can start a
seris of hiking in Egypt's mountains. :)

Time to meet: From 12:30pm to 1:00pm Saturday 12 Jan.
Expect you'll return by 4:00pm back to meeting point.

Meeting point: Maadi's Mo'men near Autostrade

What to bring: training shoes that could get muddy or
dusty. Some warm clothes but not too warm since you'll
feel warm during the walk. Bottle of water. Wear jeans
becuase you will be sitting on rocks.

Important Notes:
-we'll take route that 'normal' cars could follow so
you can plan on taking it to starting point.

-for the walk, we'll jump (or slide) down few rock
steps at the canyon at starting point, walk our way at
the bottom on flat ground for a while, might walk up a
side before we finally head back to where we started
to take cars back to Maadi.

-Beware! Although the walk is not dangerous, the
terrain is not flat and we'll be crossing many slopes.

-There is wildlife there and no cars noise, so you're
expected to speak softly to others and refrain from
shouting. In fact, try to refrain completely from
talking or you won't be seeing the canyon's beauty
that includes natural bushes and beautiful rock forms
and maybe a gazelle like my lucky brother once saw.

-This walk is quite easy and doesn't need much fitness
even if you don't like to walk normally in streets.
Don't expect to go without panting. But don't let
tiring parts of the walk distract you from a
'breathtaking' view.

-You MUST call me ASAP to inform of names joining. I
need to know how many of us to expect.

-Some points here are subject to modifications as this
is the first time to lead people into a walk in nature
although I know that some of us here in SS know much
of Wadi Digla by heart.

See you in Nile Safari and Wadi Digla Walk.

Salaam,
Mohamed Mabrouk

Dear Safarists,

This coming Saturday 26 Jan from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, you can join us
for a small walk in Wadi Degla.

Benefits are countless for your body as well as your soul. Read
Randa's report (who joined us last time) on:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SaharaSafaris/message/451

The same things apply like last time so ready this carefully:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SaharaSafaris/message/445

Please bring warm clothes, and good shoes and bottle of water. Your
Camera is welcome too but you better plan to come to enjoy nature and
listen to deserts birds singing like last time.

Although children are welcome, you'll have to take care of them
yourself. If you're not sure about yourself walkind down steep areas,
then you better come alone first time.

Meeting point at Maadi's Mo'men from 12:30 to 1:00pm. Please be early
a bit to be introduced to others before we take the cars to Wadi
Degla.

Sun will set on 5:30pm approx. and moon will be lighting up the
canyon for us. For those who'll stay to see it, we'll be back by
8:00pm to Maadi.

You must confirm your coming on phone or email to me your preference
for time to be back to Maadi (8:00pm for sunset or 4:00pm during day.
PLEASE! :)

Salaam,
Mohamed Mabrouk

Dear Safarists,

This Friday May 10th, there will be another hike in Wadi Degla
Canyon. Bring your training shoes (or better half boot walking shoes)
and easy clothes that you could sit on the sand with.

I think there will be many new girls and guys this time, so there
will be some introductions to each other.

This time we'll start a bit late. From 2:30 to 3:00 we'll be
gathering at Mo'men Maadi.

There's one very interesting astronomical phenomenon that will take
place that evening of Friday. Mars will be exactly over Venus planet.
Some think that it means something as Mars represent men and Venus
women. You can see it yourself as it happens and maybe feel the
impact of the phenomenon on yourself. :) We'll try to see this right
after we cool down from the walk starting 7:30pm towards the West sky
about 15 degrees high above the horizon (I'll guide you then but
they're about 20 degrees above Orion's shoulders). Notice that while
Venus is only 11 light-minutes away, Mars is almost double that far
from Earth at 20 light-minutes.

After we see it and talk a bit, some of you will head back and others
might like to stay. We'll see then how it goes but you should expect
to be back 9ish at Momen at earliest.

See you at 2:30 Fri, and Oh! I promise we'll leave on 3:00pm sharp
and even if I got calls from people stuck on traffic jams or
whatever, I'll leave on time and have no guilt since I can make it up
to you on other times! :) For those who think they might be late, aim
at coming on 2:30pm please. You'll find many interesting others to
chat with.

Salaam,
Mohamed Mabrouk

Dear Hosam and All,

> Hi Mohamed
> This is Hosam one of the new members.I would like to
> ask you about tomorrow's trip to Wadi Degla
> 1-How can i Jaine this trip? and how i can contact
> you
> before that

to join the walk, all you need to do is to show up in
time 2:30pm in front of Momen Maadi.

> 2-Can i get my 2 boys with me (14 & 12 y old)

Youngesters are more than welcome (hopefully, they'll
love nature more than this generation did), but should
be careful since at some parts there will be some
slopes to walk on. At some other points we stop and
get completely silent, you should prepare them for
this too.

> 3-Is there any Charge ? and how much?

Oh come on! Did you think we charge you here?? :))
Nil. Just spread the word that Nature and Wild Life
need friends to enjoy it with meditation and silence
and adventure.

> 4-It's OK if i come with my 4x4?

You don't need a 4x4 where we're going. :) But I am
sure some 4x4 fans and owners might like to check it
out whe you're over.

Bring a backpack that you could put the water bottle
in during your walk. This leaves your hands free for
some support sometimes. Cap (or maybe Arabic Shmaq) is
needed for the sun.

Easy sandwitches and other drinks are ok to get from
the cars after the walk.

> Do you
> think there will be people going back before 9? I

I cannot guarantee that. But I am expecting we'll be
back to the cars from the walk from 6-7pm. It takes
like half an hour to get back to Maadi or Autostrad
near Maadi. If somebody is going back then maybe she
can follow him/her in her car.

If you're going to Cilantro in the next ten days why not pop down the street
to the Akhnaton Gallery by the Nile (1 El Mahad El Swissery st, zamalek), on
a mini-safari, to experience the exhibition:

Islam in Sicilia - Un giardino tra due civilta

i really liked the show - a mix of art, video (story telling and don't miss
the tent in the back garden), music and crafts - maybe because it stretched
me (a lot) in both languages i'm trying to learn (arabic and italian) or it
reminded me of one of my favourite journeys (another story... when I worked
as a tour guide taking english catholic pilgrims around Europe) but mainly
because Sicily is a fascinating mix of greek, roman, byzantine, arab,
norman, italian, etc...

...the mediterranean island enjoyed great prosperity under the Tunisian
Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century before they were overwhelmed by the
Normans in the 11th century (who were also conquering Britain around the
same time) - but the resulting Norman-Arab produced some of the most
beautiful and stunningly decorated buildings in the world (see Palermo,
Monreale, Messina.) it also left a legacy in the culture, language, gardens,
music, great food, drink, sweets and cakes to die for......

As DH Lawrence said 'I like Sicily extremely - a good on-the-brink feeling -
one hop and you're out of Europe... Enjoy...

Martin

(PS unfortunately there's nothing to eat on show - but the cilantro brownies
aren't a bad substitute.)
