Thanks Makram for your sweet wishes,

I also wish all the list, and all the world a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Adha. May we see a better world in 2007, with our GIS business booming, and helping support development goals, less famine, better resources management, and less conflicts and bloodshed in the world.

Don't forget to make your GIS resolutions for 2007;-)

Dear Huda;
First of greetings to you from Ghazi Qussous in Jordan.
I will look for you in some of my old files as I might have old docs that
will help you. Anyway you should know that GIS did not start really as GIS.
It started as an extention of other fields such as photogrammetry and
digital mapping. The people working in these field starting automizing
their work using computers in the 80's and while doing the maps in digital
form they felt slowly the need to add attributes to this digital data, and
slowly this became towards the use of GIS as we know it.
The first Digital mapping conference was held in Neiroubi 1967 if a I
remember well. My Self I started with Digital mapping and followed the
trend until now. The Canadians were developped in using GIS for the Hotels
I saw an application myself during a conference in 1985. The system was
installed in the Grand Hotel and helped me a lot to find places arounds.
The first issue of a GIS review was 1981 or 1982 I have to look for it. It
has also a mention about the evolution.
Leading companies at the time 1985 for example. Intergraph, Syscan, and
Arcinfo and some others. We had atender once in the instituion where I used
to work before...The Jordanian geographic center. One site I visited in
1985 was the KODAMS the digital mapping site og Intergraph in the
municipality of Kuwait.

I hope this will help you for know I will more for you. By the I used to
teach this chapter when I was conducting GIS courses.

Thanks for the input, Ghazi

One correction for now regarding ESRI - ArcInfo.
Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) is the company.
ArcInfo was the software produced by ESRI then.

Dear Huda and All,

I might add to what Mr. Ghazi mentioned the name of Roger Tomlinson as well.
They say he's the father of GIS and 'he' is the one who called it GIS. He's
Australian and I think he was working for the Academia before moving for his
consulting firm now. He's old but still is contributing to the industry. I
have no idea of his current whereabouts, but I saw him 3 years ago in a
seminar in San Diego where he was sitting next to me and I have to say that
in addition to his technical fame, he's also a very nice down-to-earth
person.

Salaam,
Mohamed Mabrouk
